Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the Caribbean. Although only 3 Caribbean islands call Spanish as their official language — Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic — there are 15 Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean region (Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Colombia and Venezuela) and another 5 countries where some Spanish is spoken (Aruba, Curacao, Belize, U.S. Virgin Islands, Trinided and Tobago).

I recently went to St Maarten/ St Martin , a Caribbean island in the West Indies. As a Spanish teacher living in Toronto I was impressed by relizing that Spanish was the 3d most spoken language on this island. It’s very multicultural and diverse (more than 100 different nationalities live there). Everybody spoke to me in Spanish.

The Caribbean is another wonderful and paradisiacal spot to practice your Spanish. Be prepared to come across differences in pronunciation, grammar, and phrases, plus some local slang.
