About me

Carla Soto

I was born in Ramsgate, Kent, England to a Spanish-Cuban mother. My mom went to study English while pregnant and had me while in England.

When I was two years old, we returned to Venezuela. Venezuela is the country I owe everything to: My being, my identity, my language, my culture and my essence. I have always identified with the place and its climate, people, music, food and idiosyncrasies.

I have two great idols in my life: my mother and my grandfather. Both have been pillars for my educational and emotional formation. Both always had a book in their hands and valued literature. My love and respect for Spanish began with them.

On January 18, 2014 I gave birth to a wonderful warrior, a healthy and beautiful girl named Carmela.

My husband being an English speaker, I feared she wouldn’t understand or like my culture. I did my best to teach her to speak it, understand it, love and live it.

Fortunately, I married a man who loves our culture, understands it, and supports it.

Today, I continue the task of teaching and sharing my culture in Toronto. I strive to live it and express it with my daughter, my husband, my family, my friends and my students. I currently teach Spanish and dance classes.
