On November 2 & 3, local Mexican business owners, artists and performers have been
brought together by Silvia Sanchez, curator for Day of the Dead at Beaches
Sandbox, to celebrate and share this tradition with the Beaches community.
“Day of the Dead is a day where we get together as a family to honor the memory of
our loved ones who have passed away, by sharing stories about them, building an
altar with their mementos and favourite food and drinks. It is a celebration of their
lives. It is our way of showing them that we have not forgotten them and that they are
still important in our lives,” says Silvia Sanchez. “Day of the Dead is a holiday that
anyone can celebrate, regardless of cultural heritage. Ideally, it should remind us of
our commonalities as humans.”
“We are thrilled to host Day of the Dead at Beaches Sandbox, in partnership with the
local Mexican community. Bringing people together to share their heritage and
celebrations is crucial to creating connection and understanding. Plus, it’s going to be
a ton of FUN!” says Jordan Safer, Executive Director of Beaches Sandbox.
In addition to 10 free workshops, including cooking workshops, Mexican heritage
talks, traditional Mexican Papel Picado making workshops, and dedicated kids
celebration, Beaches Sandbox will also be hosting a ticketed family friendly
performance by Tonatiuh Folk Dance Group & Viva Mexico Mariachi on Saturday.
